Christmas trees bring beauty and joy, but they’re also large combustible items. Use these NFPA-backed tips to celebrate safely at home and work.
Why it matters
Between 2018 and 2022, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 155 home structure fires caused by Christmas trees each year, resulting in four civilian deaths, seven injuries, and $15 million in direct property damage. Fresh trees dry out over time and become more flammable, which is why incidents—though not common—can be severe. (Source: NFPA)
Smart steps from the tree lot to take down
1) Choose a safer tree
- Freshness test: Run your hand along a branch; if more than a few needles fall off, it may indicate a dry tree.
- Cut 2 inches (5 cm) from the trunk before placing it in the stand; add water daily.
2) Place it with safety in mind
- Keep the tree at least 3 ft (1 m) from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, and lights; don’t block exits.
- Most Christmas tree fires start in the living room (≈40%), so be extra vigilant there.
3) Light it right
- Inspect decorative lights and follow manufacturer instructions; some are indoor-only or outdoor-only.
- Use lights certified by an independent testing laboratory.
- Electrical distribution or lighting equipment are involved in ≈41% of home Christmas tree fires; lamps/bulbs ≈20%; candles ≈11%.
4) Dispose promptly
Remove the tree right after Christmas or when it becomes dry. Don’t store dried trees in homes/garages or place them outside against the building; check local recycling programs.
Quick checklist
- Water daily (set a reminder).
- Keep 3 ft clearance from heat sources and candles.
- Use listed/certified lights; replace damaged strands.
- Turn off lights before bed or leaving the house.
- Dispose when dry; use community recycling.
- Keep a multi-purpose (ABC) fire extinguisher accessible and know how to use it.
