Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower

At Sentry Fire, we’re proud to support Fire Prevention Week 2026, an annual public education campaign focused on helping families, businesses, and communities reduce the risk of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries through safe charging habits.

Why Safe Charging Matters

Many of the devices we use every day are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, including:

Smartphones
Tablets
Laptops
Power tools
E-bikes
E-scooters
Portable electronics

While these batteries are safe when used properly, improper charging, damaged batteries, or incompatible charging equipment can increase the risk of overheating and fire.

Six Superpower Charging Tips

Use the Right Charger

Always use the charger and cable supplied by the manufacturer or an approved replacement. Using incompatible chargers can damage batteries and increase fire risks.

Choose a Safe Charging Surface

Place devices on a hard, flat surface such as a desk, table, or counter while charging. Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, or under pillows where heat can become trapped.

Unplug When Fully Charged

Disconnect devices once charging is complete. Leaving devices plugged in longer than necessary can cause excess heat and place unnecessary stress on the battery.

Charge Larger Battery Devices Safely

Whenever possible, charge e-bikes, scooters, and battery-powered tools outside and away from exits or evacuation routes.

Watch for Warning Signs

Stop using a device immediately if it:

Feels unusually hot
Swells or bulges
Produces smoke
Leaks fluid
Emits a strange odor
Makes popping or hissing sounds

These may indicate battery failure and an increased fire risk.

Stay Alert While Travelling

When charging devices on an aircraft, keep them where they can be observed. Never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane, and notify flight staff if a device overheats or shows signs of malfunction.
